- The GrowthNET project was my BA(Arch) final project, based in Kualua Lumpur,
The project starts from a central node and radiates out at 72 DEGREES forming new nodes which themselves then
radiate out using circulation constructed from old SHIPPING CONTAINERS and supported on stacked OIL DRUMS.
The project was an early investigation into system designSITE SPECIFIC GENERATIVE ARCHITECTURE is a study
of the Architectural design
process, focusing on the developing field of GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and the effect this
information could have on the feasibility of an automated process. The GIS data would make the design SITE
SPECIFIC a feature lacking in much generative Architecture ROBOPLAY was a reaction to the serious direction
the research had started
to take in SSGA. ROBOPLAY investigated play as being a first principle of design, exploring emergent systems
in a playful manor, the advantage of this approach was that it allowed questions to be asked without the
pressure to answer them, it instigated my thinking about system motivation for growth4PS2+1PC explores the
relationship and feedback loop between the human
designer and the technologies employed in the generative design process. The designers input designs into
3 Linux playstation2s running original software. A PC then analysed the designs of the users and fed that
data back to a fourth Playstation2 that inturn fedback a master design to the users.
following an exploration into the applicaton of cellular automata in the generation of form the
project ask, what tectonic culture is applicable in this type of emergent systems form generation. The
project requires a system, that is intelligent and flexible, whilst retaining its own structural integrity,
some important areas of investigation are in nanotechnology and ants.
The government has requested the construction of 500,000 new homes to help the housing shortage.
A developer has developed a brief for a new city of 200,000 people in the Vale of York, to the South West of York.
The areas rich cultural heritage and natural beauty will have a lot of input into the design,
more perhaps than the developer might originally have anticipated
