Salamu Alaykum,
At Shayirha we have a strong believe that design is great, and therefore should be shared with *everyone*. This passion for sharing is at the core of Shayirha and is reliant solely on the individual’s participation in both suggesting topics of discussion and in actually discussing them. As such we ask of every design lover out there with a topic that he or she would really like to discuss to come forward with it in this post.
Please comment to this post with whatever topic you think is fitting while keeping in mind our three simple rules:
- The presenter has to be genuinely *interested* in the topic he chooses to share.
- The presentation has to be carried out in a *participatory discussion* format, in other words “no more boring lectures !!”.
- Finally, *design in all of its forms* is our one and only topic, so please no discussions about what you think is the best “kabsah” shop in Khobar ya jma3ah =p
These rules apply to both people who are attending our weekly meeting at KFUPM and for those of you who would like to suggest a topic and discuss it online. Topics will be selected by group nomination and then discussed in our meetings, followed by being posted to the blog for further discuss by those who were not able to attend our meeting, so that everybody can share the learning experience!!
Have a nice day and remember, sharing is fun =p

im kindly requesting a topic about What is Idustrial Design or Product Design, what do you know about it, how important for us ‘arabs’ to have an independent indstrial design base, thus what doors would it open to our market our people and our NEEDS, oh im sorry of this tall msg but at the end
do you have this major in saudi? what countires are offering it at thier universities, and if u collect good information please present where are our industrial designers at??

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN IN THE ARAB WORLD
********************************************************
Dear Sawsan, Thank you for your suggestion/questions.
From my what I know there are no universities/schools that currently provide Industrial Design as a major, a quick Google session confirmed my suspicions. Even though we have a few good design schools in the Arab world such as:
> VCUQatar ( http://www.qatar.vcu.edu )
> AUS SA+D ( http://www.aus.edu/arcdes )
these accredited schools teach many design disciplines including fashion design and graphics, and yet sadly don’t provide Industrial Design as a major, they might provide it as a core course/elective though.
As for the question about a “base” for Industrial Designers in the Arab world and where those designers *are*, the closest you could get to an answer would be conferences like:
> TASMEEM ( http://tasmeem.qatar.vcu.edu/tasmeem )
> IDA ( http://www.dexigner.com/product/news-g7219.html )
> Dubai’s International Design Forum ( http://designmind.frogdesign.com/articles/summer/dubais-international-design-forum.html )
where designers of all fields meet and discuss the industry and its products/services.
Also a few magazines such as:
> BROWNBOOK ( http://brownbookmagazine.blogspot.com ) + ( http://brownbookmag.com )
> OASIS ( http://www.oasis-mag.com/site )
sometimes publish the work of local product designers/artist the likes of:
> Joseph El Khoury ( http://www.exnihilo-design.com )
> Ahmad S. Angawi ( http://issuu.com/zaina/docs/brownbookissue11_issuu/48 )
> Karim Rashid ( http://www.karimrashid.com )
and help to bring those designers to the front.
Sawsan, as a person with an interest in Industrial Design, would you be willing to make a simple 10min presentation discussing the questions you’ve asked in your post? We would be more than happy to include such a presentation in our next Shayirha group meeting and discuss and then share our findings/discussions with the rest of the world here on our blog, after all this *team spirit* is what Shayirha is all about =)

Salam again,
im so sorry i didnt mention that i got a bachelors degree in Industrial Design form Yarmouk University- jordan.
I suggested this topic in here precisely, because i thought Saudi arabia is offering the major somewhere in its Universities..its the leading country in the region with production and manufacturing, but when we will see it the leading in producing the reagion’s needs with its oun materials, you what im talikg about, i mean we have the materials, the best labor and we are really in need for customized products, isn’t it enough with imported products?
what is holding us down not to produce as much as we can while having all the resources? take turkey as example they produce what they consume, barely to import form outside.
i think if this issue got the way up to the responsibles and people in charge, inshallah it will find its way to have consumers to consume we will satisfy the arab world needs!
sorry for talking much but it really upsets me.
hope you take any kind of discussions about it as i think saudi is the first target to start up with.
again thank you for this really nice SHAYIRHA way:)
Have a nice day.
Sawsan M.
بالنسبة للمواضيع
هل حتقدموها على شكل محاضرة أو كورس في الجامعة؟ ولا هنا في المدونة؟
Dear Sawsan,
we share your feelings about the current lack of teaching product design as a profesional desipline in the Kingdom. As someone who has studied industrial design formaly would you be willing to share your experiances, good and bad, with us in the form of a simple 5-10min powerpoint presentation and maybe also descuss the current lack of an initiaitve to address industrial/product design as a *proper* profesional feild and what you might think could solve the problem. If you are able to then we would definitly run the powerpoint presentation in one of our next meetings and discuss it further and post the whole thing online afterwards.
waiting with great positivity for your reply =)

Dear Abdulah,
Shayirha is a group meeting open to everyone interested in design, held every Monday from 8-9 at KFUPM’s building 19, 3rd floor.
The meeting is documented and posted to the blog with all content as soon as they are ready, whereupon more discussions are supposed to be held online by people who could not manage to attend.
You can read more about shayirha here: ( http://www.shayirha.com/blog/?p=1 ).
lets see you in our next meeting enshalah =)
